When Does Lawn Treatment Season Start in Wisconsin?

The starting gun is the soil, not the date. Once the ground has fully thawed and soil temperatures begin rising toward the mid-50s, it is time for the first application. In Southeast Wisconsin that is usually April, but a cold, late spring can push it back and a warm one can pull it forward.

The season almost always opens with a pre-emergent crabgrass preventer, because that job is the most timing-sensitive of the year — it has to be down before crabgrass germinates. From there, the rest of the program follows in sequence through spring, summer, and fall.

Committing to “the first week of April” every year would mean applying products at the wrong time in a third of those years. Instead, we watch conditions and start when the lawn is ready, which is the whole point of working with a licensed, local applicator.

Early spring is a good time to get on the schedule, clear debris from the lawn, and hold off on heavy raking or seeding plans until we have talked through timing. Getting your estimate in before the rush means your first application lands right in the window.
